Building Good Habits: Paper Clip Strategy
Have you ever had a challenge building good habits? Let’s face it, good things are not always easy to do. It’s not always fun to study when we want to watch tv. It may not be as tasty to eat one cookie instead of two. Whatever it is that we are doing, we need to be consistent.
The Paper Clip Strategy
I am going to say paper clip but really, you can use anything. Marbles, pennies, stones or whatever you like is fine but don’t make them too big because you want them to fit into a small-ish jar.
Let’s say that you want to make 20 calls a day. If you wanted to make those 20 calls a day you would make a call and then take the object of your choice and put it from one jar into another. As you are going through the day, you will see that you are making progress. Our eyes will help us keep on track and we will see that we are accomplishing our goal.
This may not seem like a big deal when you are building good habits but it will help you reinforce the idea in your mind. You will see the progress and stay motivated.
You can use this strategy with anything. It doesn’t just have to be with calls. You can do this with miles that you walk, keeping track of a workout, keeping track of how many health meals you ate or how many bottles of water that you drank. It can work for whatever it is that you want to achieve so that is up to you.
